BVB tops 'Group of Death' ahead of PSG-AC Milan-Newcastle


Borussia Dortmund's players are pleased with their progress in the 'Group of Death'.


Borussia Dortmund defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the fourth leg of their UEFA Champions League Group F match of the 2023-2024 season at 2:45 a.m. ET at BVB Stadion Dortmund.


With the win, Dortmund moved to the top of Group F in the 'Group of Death'. Dortmund is in first place with seven points (two wins, one draw, one loss), Paris Saint-Germain is second with six points (two wins, two losses), and AC Milan is third with five points (one win, two draws, one loss). Newcastle is fourth with four points (one win, one draw, and two losses).


Hosting Newcastle, Dortmund opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a goal from Niklas Fulkruk and added a second goal from Julian Brandt in the 34th minute en route to a 2-0 win.


After the match, UEFA Champions League published interviews with head coach Edin Dzuric and players.


Coach Terzic said: "The whole team played a really good game. Newcastle are a team that rarely lose recently, but they've beaten us twice. The second half was a bit more difficult, but we had more possession in the beginning," he said, adding that he was pleased with the performance.


Pilkruk scored the game's opening goal, which marked his Champions League debut. "I felt at the beginning of this game that we could win," he said. Julian 'Ace' Brandt, who scored the second goal, said: "This was obviously a really important game. Brandt added: "The second goal was definitely a relief for us. Karim Adeyemi found me in a rush and I put the ball in the right place," he said, explaining the circumstances of the goal.


Adeyemi, who assisted on Brandt's goal, said: "I can be happy with our performance. We beat a team that has been in top form with the second goal. Nothing is decided in this chaotic group yet, but we have put ourselves in a good position before the last two games."
